Lydia Fenet, who was always a fixture on the benefit circuit and has always been popular as an auctioneer at Christie's (now there's a nice, old-fashioned, hard-working socialite job in the spirit of Nan Kempner!) is one of those people who was made stronger when society almost killed her. One of the few still-findable threads on the defunct Socialite Rank Web site is the one in which a series of commenters piles on after a pitcure of her appeared there along with something from the email bag praising her eloquence and wit at a Christie's auction. The commenters smelled the chum and went wild. Not only was Ms. Fenet tried and convictied of having planted the pitch herself: the commenters piled on, calling her "horse face," one even saying she had a face like Dennis Hopper. The socialites, who in fact had been watching the site closely, rallied to her defense. Later, friends said comments on the site had Ms. Fenet crying for days. And society has never loved her more. She's really the one with the endless list of thankless board memberships--Hale House, Henry Street Settlement, New York City Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and on and on.
