Socialites on Observer.com: Socialite Slapdown: The Final Four

Brains

Society spends a lot of time arguing that its denizens are not mindless spenders of money, "heir-heads" and publicity-hounds, shallow party-goers, subpar education and coarse materialism. Shouldn't the fact that one has so many advantages only tend to give people the ability to improve themselves? And yet so few do! Socialites with brains come in two forms: people whose accomplishments outside of Manhattan society are so recognizable and incontrovertible as to make them essential people to Manhattan's social elites; and those specimens society still manages to turn out every once in a while who actually end up making something more significant of themselves than can be expressed in a snapshot on Patrick McMullan's Web site. This division is for them.
